what is the british standard for ladders

The British Standard for ladders is BS EN 131 and it covers all types of portable ladders, including stepladders, extension ladders and combination ladders. The BS EN 131 sets the safety requirements for the design and manufacture of all UK ladders, ensuring they meet specific standards for strength and stability.

When Was the BS EN 131 Standard Introduced?

The BS EN 131 British Standard for ladders was introduced in 2019 and replaced the previous British Standards BS 2037 and BS 1129  (often referred to as Class 1 and Class 3 ladders), which have now been withdrawn.

The European Commission were unhappy with these original standards and highlighted the lack of appropriate stability, slip, durability and strength requirements – the key areas that cause the majority of ladder-related accidents.

What Ladders Are Exempt From BS EN 131?

Step stools, which are covered by the European Standard EN14183, and loft ladders, which are covered by the European Standard EN14975, are both exempt from BS EN 131.

What Does BS EN 131 Cover?

The EN 131 standard aims to improve ladder safety by manufacturing ladders wider, stronger and sturdier than before. The EN 131 also requires all ladders and steps to have appropriate labelling and user instructions.

This new and improved British Standard for ladders now provides a simple two-class system, separating ladders into either professional (for use in the workplace) or non-professional (domestic) use. Plus, there is now a requirement for every ladder to have a weight capacity of at least 150kg.

In addition to the new requirements mentioned above, the EN 131 also implements new and updated testing criteria.

For standard leaning ladders, the EN 131 includes the following tests:

  • Base Slip Test
  • Lateral Deflection
  • Bend Test
  • Strength Test
  • Torsion Test
  • Stabiliser Test
  • Rung Test

Meanwhile, standing ladders are checked using the following tests:

  • Durability Test
  • Opening Restraints and Hinge Test
  • Torsion Test
  • Lateral Deflection
  • Bend Test

If they can pass these tests, the ladders will be deemed worthy of EN131 certification.

Can I Still Use My Class 1 and Class 3 Ladders?

Yes, although ladders designed and manufactured to the previous standards are no longer available, standards are not retrospective and you may continue to use your ladders if they are in good condition. However, when those ladders become worn out and need replacing, you should only buy ladders which meet the latest EN 131 British Standard for ladders.
