How to use a telescopic ladder safely
Telescopic ladders are perfectly safe to use as long as you follow the safety guidelines that apply to all leaning ladders. Check out our How to Climb a Ladder Safely guide for advice.
It is also crucial that you work on a level surface, i.e. a clean and flat floor. Never erect your telescopic ladder on an uneven floor as this could cause it to tip over. You should also never stand your ladder on something else to achieve additional height.
How to set up a telescopic ladder
- Before setting up your telescopic ladder, read through the instructional manual provided by the manufacturer. This will let you know of any safety devices included and explain how to secure the locking mechanisms.
- When you’re ready, place the ladder on the ground adjacent to the wall you’ll be leaning it against. Some telescopic ladders will come with integrated wall spacers and tool trays. If so, these will help you to measure how far away from the wall the ladder should be when setting it up.
- If your ladder doesn’t come with these additional features, you can calculate the distance using the '1 in 4' rule (for every 4 feet of height, position the base of the ladder 1 foot away from the wall).
- Now simply extend the ladder rung by rung to the height you require, then lock in place. When you're finished, simply collapse the ladder and put it away.
What is a telescopic ladder?
A telescopic ladder is a type of extending ladder that can be extended and collapsed like a telescope, hence the name. When collapsed, it is compact enough to transport with ease – so if you don’t have a van or a roof rack, you can simply store your ladder in the boot of your car.
If you need a ladder for domestic tasks, telescopic ladders can also be easily stored in a household cupboard.
Telescopic ladders are an increasingly popular choice for tradespeople on the go. They offer great value for money, and because they collapse down to a small size, they’re very easy to transport and store.
Why choose a telescopic ladder?
Telescopic ladders have several advantages over other ladder types. We’ve already mentioned one huge benefit, that being how incredibly convenient they are to use and store. But they’re also less prone to weather damage, scuffs and scrapes than traditional ladders because they’re so compact.
A telescopic ladder is versatile and simple to use. It can be adjusted to a wide range of heights and can thus be used for a wide variety of tasks (including domestic DIY and, depending on the ladder’s rating, professional trade jobs).
Another advantage: telescopic ladders are quick and easy to set up.
